Cluster size distribution of infection in a system of mobile agents

Clusters of infected individuals are defined on data from health laboratories, but this quantity has not been defined and characterized by epidemy models on statistical physics. For a system of mobile agents we simulate a model of infection without immunization and show that all the moments of the cluster size distribution at the critical rate of infection are characterized by only one exponent, which is the same exponent that determines the behavior of the total number of infected agents. No giant cluster survives independent on the magnitude of the rate of infection.Comment: preprint for Physica A, proceedings of Medyfinol in La Seren

Background: The aim of this investigation was to validate the Relaxation- Mindfulness Scale for Adolescents (EREMIND-A), consisting of 18 items and three factors (Attention-Concentration in the present moment; Relaxation (abilities and attitudes); and Sensory awareness/Contemplation/ Interiority). Method: The validation was done with a sample of Secondary Education and Baccalaureate students from four different centres in Spain (n = 1.120). EFA and CFA of the EREMIND-A were performed and construct and incremental validities calculated. Results: Initial results confi rm the validity and reliability of the scale. Conclusions: There is a need for a broader conceptualization of mindfulness, as well as the inclusion and analysis of other related and cross-cutting concepts. The research in this sense will propitiate the adaptation of the Mindfulness- Based Interventions to the reality of the adolescents in the educational centers, where relaxation and the interiority are aspects to be taken into consideration. © 2018 Psicothema.

Scaling of the propagation of epidemics in a system of mobile agents

For a two-dimensional system of agents modeled by molecular dynamics, we simulate epidemics spreading, which was recently studied on complex networks. Our resulting network model is time-evolving. We study the transitions to spreading as function of density, temperature and infection time. In addition, we analyze the epidemic threshold associated to a power-law distribution of infection times.Comment: 10 pages, 7 Postscript figure

Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG[Abstract] Introduction: Phrenic nerve transfer has been shown to achieve good nerve regeneration in brachial plexus avulsion. Acellular nerve allografts (ANAs) showed inferior results to autografts, which is why its use with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is currently being studied. The aim is to study the effect of BM-MSCs associated with ANAs in a rat model of phrenic nerve transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve in a C5-C6 avulsion. Material and methods: 42 Wistar-Lewis rats underwent a C5-C6 lesion in the right forelimb by excising a 3 mm segment from both roots, followed by a phrenic nerve transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve associated with the interposition of a three types of nerve graft (randomly distributed): control (autograft) group (n = 12), ANAs group (n = 12), and ANAs + BM-MSCs group (n = 18) After 12 weeks, amplitude and latency of the NAP and the compound motor action potential (CMAP) were measured. Biceps muscles were studied by histological analysis and nerve grafts by electron microscopy and fluorescence analysis. Results: Statistically significant reductions were found in latency of the CMAP between groups control (2.48 ± 0.47 ms) and experimental (ANAs: 4.38 ± 0.78 ms, ANAs + BM-MSCs: 4.08 ± 0.85 ms) and increases in the amplitude of the CMAP between groups control (0.04388 ± 0.02 V) and ANAs + BM-MSCs (0.02275 ± 0.02 V), as well as in the thickness of the myelin sheath between groups control (0.81 ± 0.07 μm) and experimental (ANAs: 0.72 ± 0.08 μm, ANAs + BM-MSCs: 0.72 ± 0.07 μm) and in the area of the myelin sheath between groups control (13.09 ± 2.67 μm2 ) and ANAs (10.01 ± 2.97 μm2 ) (p < .05). No statistically significant differences have been found between groups ANAs and ANAs + BM-MSCs. Conclusions: This study presents a model for the study of lesions of the upper trunk and validates the autologous graft as the gold standard

We thank the anonymous referees for their detailed suggestions and comments, which have greatly improved this article.A C-semigroup (respectively a D-semigroup) is a positioned numerical semigroup S such that g(S) (Formula presernted) (respectively g(S) (Formula presernted). In this paper we study these semigroups giving formulas for the Frobenius number, pseudo-Frobenius number, and type. Furthermore, we give algorithms for computing the whole set of C-semigroups and D-semigroups

Atlantic cod predation on redfish in Flemish Cap

The aim of this study is to estimate the predation on redfish by Atlantic cod in Flemish Cap in the period 2000- 2010 and the impact of the cod stock recovery in recent years on the prey stock. Atlantic cod samples of stomach contents were taken in the Flemish Cap survey (NAFO Div. 3M). The analysis was done jointly from all individuals, undifferentiated sexes. They were established four size groups of Atlantic cod with a different predation rate on redfish: less than 30 cm, 30-59 cm, 60-79 cm and ≥80 cm. Results show a clear increasing trend in the daily consumption of redfish by cod since 2005. Cod less than 30 cm (one year old) does not consume redfish. Cod with lengths more than 30 cm presents an increasing trend in the quantity of the redfish preyed in the analyzed period. This trend is more evident in the cod more than 60 cm, ages older than 5 years old. Redfish more than 27 cm (older than 8 years old) does not appear in the cod diet. Redfish estimated biomass consumed by total cod biomass is higher than redfish biomass estimated in the last approved assessment disappeared by natural mortality in the period 2000-2005

Exercise redox biology from health to performance

In order to support the energy demand during physical exercise, temporary acute responses occur in our organism to meet the homeostatic challenge imposed by the working muscles. As a result of the accumulation of exercise bouts the organism adapts. Exercise adaptations refer to the long-term changes that occur in our body as a consequence of training. The molecular bases of skeletal muscle adaptations to exercise such as mitochondrial biogenesis, hypertrophy, angiogenesis, and cytoprotection, are mediated by signaling events regulating transcriptional and translational processes and the activity of proteins involved in the maintenance of homeostasi
